Sleeping

June 28?, 2014

Sleeping

Breathe, snore, sigh,
Breathe, snore, sigh,
Inhalation, exhalation
Greets my ear tonight.

All around my bed
My family dreams so deep:
A breathing orchestra,
Performing in their sleep.

Each member adds their part
To the peaceful slumber sound;
I lie awake just listening
To dreaming all around.

The Sinless Lamb

June 25, 2014 & August 18, 2015

The Sinless Lamb

Upon Thy Head the crown
With thorns, as stood around
The ones who should
Receive the good
You did, yet mocked and frowned.

Thy shoulders bore the weight,
(For sin God has such hate!),
To God You cried,
Yielded, and died,
Where on Thee hung man’s fate.

Thy shadow-loving friends
Thought they had seen the end:
“He has met death.”
With Thy last breath
Man’s judgment did rescind.

A place was newly hewn,
(‘Twas but a borrowed tomb),
Where laid my LORD,
But by His Word,
Three days found an empty room.

The women came that morn
To anoint Him and to mourn
But found instead
Our Lord not dead!
He all Death’s pow’r had torn!

Moments with Meemaw

                                                                June 22, 2014

                                                         Moments with Meemaw

I woke up yesterday
And I saw her smiling face:
One more day, one more day,
Praise the LORD.
Another moment, another kiss,
Another time to hug her.

I sat beside her frail form
And read the Word,
A familiar book.
She raised her hand,
A silent “Amen”
Which her lips couldn’t say.
My precious grandfather,
Her husband so dear,
Joined in
Our reading time
And said the words
For both of them.

And then I heard
Her voice:
She was quoting, too,
The words she’d hidden
In her heart,
Long before.

‘Though time be short (on this side)
And each second precious, (priceless),
The switch will flip
And then begins Eternity!
Oh! blissful thought!
Forever with her LORD!

My Kind of People

June 14, 2014

My Kind of People

I’m of a kind and simple people
Of the Gentle Shepherd’s sheep
Who have a down-home way of livin’
That I desire to keep.

I’m of people that show such passion
First to God, and then to their spouses,
Who work hard and live uprightly
At their jobs or in their houses.

I’m of people who “drop by” quite often,
Just to see each other;
Of those who bring their children up
To honor God, father, and mother.

Of people who sweat from honest work,
And have abundance of hope;
Of those who, going through trying times,
Turn to the LORD to cope.

I’m of people who wear their Sunday best
To church each week’s first day,
Of people who sit on a large front porch
And watch the grandkids play.

I’m of people whose smile, whose great bear hugs
Give blessings of genuine gladness,
Or whose “talk-your-ear-off” and violent agreement
Look, to strangers, much like madness!

I’m of people who’d be at church meetings
Than a gala any day,
And who turn from today’s entertainment
To have a calm chance to pray.

My people have rarely seen Pres’dents
Or people high of station,
(Unless they were preaching in foreign countries
And the LORD got them into those places.)

My people have seen the Hand of the LORD
Work mightily on dire occasions;
They’ve stayed on their knees or searched through the Word
To find answers in strained situations.

My people are nothing in this world
That glories in wealth and in power,
But I love my people for they love the LORD
Who is our Strong and Faithful High Tower.

Shine On

June 11, 2014

Shine On

In the early morning hours,
As the sun climbed higher and hotter
While the dew still dotted the little blades of grass
And the rays made diamonds and jewels
Of each drop of moisture,
Far across the pasture
Far, far into the pasture,
A bright spot of dew,
Like a beacon, shone out.
So bright, as a flash light at midnight
In Morse code it flickered
On and off, on and off.
And the girl saw it,
And it struck a chord in her heart,
And she heard the LORD’S meaning,
“So should you be.
So small in such a large field,
So bright and so brave and so persistent
It shines on and it tells the world
Of the Creator
And points to the One True God,
The Creator of light and
Light of the World.
So do: shine on.”
And now the wind has changed,
Or the droplet has fallen,
Or changed form,
But there is another,
Over to the left,
Smaller, but no less persistent.
And the first has left a legacy and the second
Shines on, shines on.
(I wrote this poem at the time of my grandmother’s short battle
with cancer.  She left a huge legacy for which I am so thankful.
By God’s grace I will carry the legacy on and live for my LORD Who
loved and saved my grandmother and myself. )

When Looking at a Tree

May 27, 2014

When Looking at a Tree

It does something to me inside,
It does me good somehow,
To look up at a well-clothed tree
As the wind blows through,
And see the thousands fluttering,
The myriads of leaves,
Dancing, oh so merrily!,
In the genial breeze.

The sunlight comes a’pourin’ through
Like a kaleidoscope;
It stirs the love of beauty,
And fans the flame of hope.
One day my heart with beauty-love
Will be quite swept away
With the glory of the Eternal God
In His sinless, Holy Place.
