A Splendid
Horse
{for Kyrie}
Look at his
mane, like a chestnut flame,
Like a chestnut
flame of glory!
It’s
streaming out from his graceful neck
Like that
of a steed in a story.
His eyes
are quick and full of all tricks
That endear
him to master and rider.
His cheeks,
and neck, and coat, and legs
Are the
color of sweet apple cider.
His blaze
so bright, like the stars at night,
Cascades
like milk to his nose.
His
nostrils flair as if from a scare,
The color
as scarlet rose.
His neat
white socks, the color of phlox,
Are held up
without a garter.
His great
energy, so amazing to see!,
All who see him fairly marvel.
All who see him fairly marvel.
Though such
a beast gives eyes quite a feast,
We know he’s
a vain thing for safety.
Do this we
must: in a horse never trust,
But in God
Who through life keeps us safely.
